Comentarios: Paul Simon aprendió esta balada tradicional inglesa en Londres en 1965 de Martin Carthy, quien había tomado la melodía del cancionero de Ewan MacColl y Peggy Seeger y la incluyó en su álbum homónimo de 1965. Simon & Garfunkel le ponen en contrapunto con "Canticle", una reelaboración de la letra de la canción antibélica de Simon de 1963, "The Side of a Hill", con una nueva melodía compuesta principalmente por Art Garfunkel.
"Scarborough Fair / Canticle" fue la pista principal del álbum de 1966 Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, y fue lanzada como single después de aparecer en la banda sonora de El Graduado en 1968.
Los derechos de autor atribuían sólo a Simon y Garfunkel como autores, lo que provocó malestar por parte de Carthy, que sintió que la fuente "tradicional" debería haber sido acreditada.
