Estamos ante una de las cimas artísticas de Paul Simon en toda su dilatada carrera, tanto por la maravillosa música como por el poético y elaboradísimo texto en el que por vez primera Simon emplea lo que en lo sucesivo será la marca de la casa, la superposición de lenguaje poético y lenguaje coloquial dentro de la misma composición, en función del momento narrativo. Posiblemente Hearts And Bones sea una de las canciones más autobiográficas de Paul Simon y en ella refleja los diversos avatares por los que atravesó su dilatado y conflictivo noviazgo con la actriz Carrie Fisher, con la que llegaría a casarse poco antes de lanzarse este álbum y de la que acabaría divorciándose meses despues. De esta canción es mucho lo que Paul ha hablado en diversas ocasiones: "...creo que es una de mis mejores canciones. Tardé mucho en escribirla y es muy sincera. Me gusta.
